ABOUT US

Since last 15 years, VARHAD is dedicatedly working for the human rights, crime prevention, reformation and dignity of the prisoners in custody and their re-integration with their families as well as society. The subsidiary activities of us are to facilitate the youths for education, skill development and career opportunities. The organisation is registered in Societies Registration Act 1860 and Public Trust Act of Government of Maharashtra, vide Regd. no F-10006 in Amravati district of Maharashtra state of India.

Currently, there are only nine prisons where VARHAD works - two central prisons (Nagpur and Amravati), six district prisons (Akola, Wardha, Yevatmal, Washim, Buldana and Gadchiroli) and one open prison in Morshi (Amravati). Our contribution in the field of prison reforms and human rights is immensely recognized by many organizations at national and international levels apart from the administration & government. Our visionary and unique work, dedication and experience has brought to fund the above activities from highly prestigious agencies notably Sir Dorabjee Tata Trust (SDTT), JRD Tata Trust (JRDTT), Give India and Global Fund for Women (GFW).

We began the work for the rehabilitation of the released prisoners, which expanded later on for prisoners’ care while they are in custody, and reintegration of convicts and their families into the society by minimizing the feeling of prison-stigma. Now, through its various projects in the field of eradicating the breeding of crime, VARHAD has become one of the most prominent Indian organizations working In this field.

As we notice that the youths coming from marginalised groups are more involved in the criminal activities, it is necessary to provide them such an environment from their childhood, which keeps them away from circumstances. One of the core aspects of it is the education and career opportunity for these unemployed youths. Whichever locality is more educated, the crime rate is less. So, as a visionary step to eradicate the criminal mindset from its roots, we have initiated a few projects which in fact are not funded till now by any agency/sponsor in a significant way. These unsponsored and visionary projects of us are (a)- providing a free of cost residential facility cum library for the study and providing guidance for their preparations in securing jobs. (b)- sponsoring the vocational training to the women in the centre ‘Krantijyoti’ for women empowerment by making self-help group (SHG) in Pune district of Maharashtra.
